"A great civil rights leader from Anniston, Alabama, Dover Ferrell joined the NAACP in 1940.' Dover was highly respected for his work with the NAACP in the state of Alabama which his work followed him and his family as the moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1960. Dover was the husband of the late Mrs. Agnes L. Christian Ferrell, later was elected secretary of the Marietta branch of the NAACP. She served for many years as the secretary of the branch and was listed as the last secretary on record in the National office for the Marietta Branch. He is currently the husband of Mrs. Carolyn Wyatt Ferrell and employee for the Cobb County government. He is the proud father of 3 daughters and 9 sons. Dover is a Deacon at Pilgrim Baptist Church where he is one of the founding members of the church. |

Dover worked with the Anniston, Alabama branch of the NAACP along with the Marietta NAACP years before moving his resident to Marietta, Georgia in 1960. He worked with two leaders upon arriving in Marietta, Ms. Essie Densmore, a founding member of the Marietta NAACP, and Reverend Cook, the Marietta NAACP President at that time. There were numerous presidents of the Marietta Branch of the NAACP Dover worked with, among them were: Rev. Cook, Mr. Hugh Grbgan, the late Rev. R.L. Johnson and the late Ms. Essie Densmore. Dover became one of the presidents of the Marietta Branch of the NAACP for two terms. During this time as president, the first African American newspaper "The Cobb Focus" was founded by Mr.
J.E. Dodd and himself shortly after the mid 60's. In the early 70's Mr. Hugh Grogan, Mr. Harold Adams, Mr. Boone Christian and Dover Ferrell filed the first reconstruction lawsuit against the city of Marietta, Georgia: The lawsuit involved the
redistricting and zoning of Marietta. The suit was won and because of hat suit Ward Five was created Hugh Grogan became the first African American to run and win the council seat. |
