The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, is the oldest, largest and strongest civil rights organization in the United States. The principal objective of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens of the United States.

The NAACP is committed to achievement through non-violence and relies upon the press, the petition, the ballot and the courts, and is persistent in the use of legal and moral persuasion even in the face of overt and violent racial hostility.

The vision and mission of the NAACP are:

Vision - The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is a society in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination.

Mission - The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.

What does the NAACP stand for? What is the NAACP doing today? These questions are frequently asked of NAACPers throughout the country on any given day. There is a clear mission, set forth by the National Board of Directors. The vision of the Association was created at a Board Retreat at Harvard University in April 2000. Although we use the terms vision, mission, goal, and objective frequently, it is no always clear to our volunteers what these terms mean. Here are definitions of the above terms:

  • Vision - (n) the act or power of imagination (b) mode of seeing or conceiving unusual discernment or foresight direct mystical awareness of the supernatural usually in visible form.

  • Mission - (n) a specific task with which a person or a group is charged.

  • Goal - (n) suggests something attained only by prolonged effort and hardship.

  • Objective - (n) something aimed at; something real and observable.
